Only the top 12 performers from the written rounds make it to the buzzer-beater Countdown Round (CDR) stage. Five of our Hurricanes earned their spot this year, with Elsa Besser ('29) crowned State CDR Champion and Violette Shue ('29) placing 3rd!
Also on stage: Liam Shemesh ('29) – Semifinalist, Sebastian Borschow ('30) – Quarterfinalist, and Arthur Oudin ('31) – Top 12.
Our team—Eva Nguyen ('30) (Captain), Sebastian Borschow, Liam Shemesh, and Elsa Besser—won 1st place, earning the Puerto Rico State Champion Team title!
In the written competition, Liam Shemesh placed 2nd overall, earning his spot in the national team representing Puerto Rico at the 2025 RTX Mathcounts National Competition in Washington, D.C. He'll be joined by Mr. Luis Beltrán, who, as coach of the winning team, will serve as Puerto Rico National Team Coach.
We're proud of Manesh Palai ('27) for serving as CDR moderator for the second year in a row and Maddox Nguyen ('28) and He Shan ('28) for proctoring—all three Mathcounts alums giving back to the program.
Congratulations to all! You make us #SJSPRoud
