Congratulations to 12th grader, Carlos Juan Ortiz, who was awarded the Medalla de la Juventud Puertorriqueña en la categoría de Ayuda a Los Necesitados for his continuous work and commitment to fostering athletics in children with disabilities. The criteria for this distinction is “developing or participating in activities, past and present, with the desire to serve those who need it the most without receiving pecuniary rewards or being personally benefited.” Carlos Juan was also awarded the Medalla del Gobernador earlier in the year.
Our very own 9th grader, Salvador Gomez is one of Time Magazine's 30 most influential teens of 2017. His campaign, "Light and Hope for Puerto Rico," raising funds for solar lamps and hand-operated washing machines, hit the media nationwide. Take a look at the article. This group worked through a tough competition at the SESO Science Bowl in Mayaguez today. After 5 additional tie-breaking rounds, they came in 4th & 5th place. Their performance was commendable.

Be part of our new strength and conditioning program for male and female student-athletes in grades 7th -12th
Monday-Thursday mornings before school, 6:30-7:30am in the Fitness Center. *A minimum of 18 registered participants are required for the program to begin.
This program will run from Monday, September 11, 2017-Thursday, December 14, 2017. Second semester dates will be forthcoming.
The cost of the program is $450 per participant for the semester, payable by credit card (online), cash, or check (payable to Saint John’s School). All check and cash payments must be made directly to the Business Office.

The French Honor Society inducted its new members for the 2017-2018 school year. the society now has 57 active members. Thanks to Dr. Nadya Alsina for being the driving force in the growth of the French Program and making it what it is today.

Congratulations to 8th grader, Gia Mar Ramos, who is a semifinalist in the 2017 ProjectCSGirls competition. ProjectCSGIRLS is a national initiative which encourages girls in technology and computer science through a hands-on competition that challenges middle school girls to come up with novel solutions to imminent social problems. Participants can build, code, or prototype their projects and must address one of three themes: global health, security, or intelligent technology. They are then required to submit a technical report of their project components and results, as well as a video describing why their product is innovative and useful. We are proud to announce that Summer Powers has been selected as one of the two recipients from Puerto Rico of the US Presidential Scholars Award. This is the fourth year in a row (2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017) that a student from SJS receives this great honor. Congratulations to 11th grader, Diego Gonzalez, who qualified to move on to the next level of the national Chemistry Olympics, with 10 other contestants from Puerto Rico.
Diego will now participate in a day long test along with 2 labs. From there a group of 20 or so students will be selected for special training and from those 20 they will select the US team for the International Chemistry Olympiad (ICO)

After reading and analyzing the story, La Escuelita Do Re Misteriosa by Isabel Arraiza Arana, the 3rd grade Spanish and music curriculums came together. Thanks to Ms Veronica Pantojas and Ms. Debbie Kersting, our students had the opportunity to play their recorders, with the orchestra, at Bellas Artes.
We are proud to announce that in today's math competition at Colegio Puertorriqueño de Niñas, Saint John's School's team, which consisted of 4th grader- Rania Marrero, 5th grader- Angelica Fortuño & 6th grader- Javier Rodriguez, came in 2nd place out of 20 participating schools. Thanks to Summer Powers, Javier Barcelo, Evalise Dexter, Pedro Rodriguez, Nissim Roffe, and Ms. Lyaned Rivera, for representing our Eco Escuela, in a Public Hearing regarding Law 247 to promote the use of reusable bags and to prohibit the use of plastic bags. Students were involved in the "Camara de Representantes," where they were acknowledged for being part of the process. We are so happy that Law 247 is going to remain as it is!

Saint John’s School is a non-profit, college preparatory, nonsectarian, coeducational day school founded in 1915. The school, located in a residential area of Condado, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, has an enrollment of over 800 students from Toddler to grade twelve.
